1st of February is officially the International Furmint Day. If you are visiting Budapest, keep in mind that this month is all about furmint wine. Restaurants and bars all across the country organize special tastings and dinners. Here I’m reviewing the most precious event, the Furmint February - Grand Tasting in the Vajdahunyad Castle.

Since I’m writing a book on the most important sights, wineries, cultural heritage and gastronomy in the Tokaj region, I spend a lot of time with traveling around and discovering all the beauties of this place. I must say, that the ultimate Tokaj lifestyle hit me and I totally fell in love with it. I learned that furmint is a dominate and incredibly versatile grape in the region, it covers almost two-thirds of the vineyard area.  Outside of Tokaj, you will find this signature grape in the Somló area (the smallest wine region in North – West Hungary). I consider furmint as our flagship wine, I’m sure that this type will gain increasing attention in the future.

Every year in February a special grand tasting is organized in the Museum of Agriculture, the place itself is fascinating as well. Vajdahunyad Castle is a complex of different kind of units. The original castle was built in order to present the architectural values of Hungary in the frame of the Millenium Exhibition in the 19th century. Did you know that the building was a temporary construction only made of wood and cardboard? Finally it got so popular that it was rebuilt from durable materials. I love this place, it’s one of the most romantic spots in the city surrounded by a little lake and the City Park. Perfect venue for a fabulous event!

This is the 10th occasion already that furmint gets the attention of all wine lovers across the country, over 100 wineries were represented mainly from the Tokaj region.  They all gathered in the enormous hall and downstairs in two smaller sections. You had the chance to learn about wine, the wine-making process and talk to the wine makers directly. The entrance ticket can be purchased online, it includes the glass, unlimited tasting from 4 pm till 9 pm and some snacks. Foodwise, delicious cheese from Mád and small sandwiches by the Ororszlános Vendéglő could be brought in the main hall,  LaBor Bistro from Tokaj served free bites with different ham versions and fresh bread. For those who wanted to take gastronomy to a higher level, oyster and salmon could have been purchased downstairs.

The event is very popular, it’s highly recommended to go there on time, it gets more crowded in the evening. I arrived in the afternoon and I met some fellow winemakers, I already know from the Tokaj region.  The impressive place and the smell of wine set the mood already.

It's revolutionary that this whole month is dedicated to one special variety, therefore you can get to know the different vintages from small or even big wineries. You can compare, taste, decide what kind of furmint is your type. I prefer fruity aromas with oaky spice and rich minerals, which is very much showing you the traditional character of the region. My absolute favorite one is the Szepsy Furmint from 2009. It's a unique old wine with honey and apricot aromas. My other favorite winery is Chateau Dereszla, its wine cellar is more than 600 years old and proves to have an excellent climate inside.

If you have passion and interest in wine, here you can learn a lot and taste all kind of furmint wines from the top wineries in Hungary. The best way to understand the wine and the wine-making process is to visit the Tokaj region, enroll for tastings on the vineyard, book a cozy room and be amazed by all the beauties that this UNESCO World Heritage Site could offer to you. Are you planning to visit Budapest anytime soon? City and river is always a great combination. The Danube played an important role in the history. Believe it or not, winter time people were crossing the frozen river on foot or on their chariot. Spring and summer they used little boats. Let me share with you the stories of our three historical bridges in Budapest. The very first bridge that connected Pest and Buda was constructed in the 18th century and it was a floating bridge, which was more like a temporary solution, they used shallow-draft boats to support the deck. This structure couldn't have been used during winter time.

The first permanent bridge was built only in the 19th century.  Why did we wait so long for a permanent bridge? It can be explained with the changing flow and extremely cold winter, there was no structure that could have lasted. The Chainbridge is considered to be a huge engineering innovation at that time. Our great reformist István Széchenyi was the biggest supporter of the project. According to a legend, his father died in February and he was not able to cross the river and take part at the funeral due to the icy blocks on the river. This personal issue made him support the project even more. Sad fact, that he was never able to see his dream come true due to his mental illness.

The bridge was designed by an English engineer, William Thierney Clark and it was supervised by the Scottish Adam Clark. The bridge finally opened in 1849, its span was one of the longest in the world at that time. The bridge was an important step towards the merging of the three cities. Later on, in 1873 the city of Budapest was officially established.

The bridge was named after the popular Habsburg Queen, Sissi. She loved the nation and Hungarians respected her.  The bridge connects the downtown with the Gellért Hill. It didn’t have any riverpad pillars and this construction was the largest chain-type solution in the world in the beginning of the 20th century.

Did you know that what we see today is not the original construction? The first bridge was built in a romantic style and it was richly decorated. During the WWII German troops blew up all the bridges on the Danube. Finally all of them were rebuilt the same style, except for the Elisabeth Bridge. The leaders of the city pursued a new, modern construction instead of the old one, therefore a sleek, white bridge was constructed in 1960 in a modern, simple way.

Right next to the foot of the bridge on the Pest side, you will find one of my favorite restaurants, Kiosk. As soon as the weather gets warm, you can sit on beanbags with a glass of wine and enjoy the Danube breeze.

If you are shopping at the Central Market Hall, you can have a glimpse of the bridge, it’s just a few steps away. The Elisabeth Bridge and the Franz Joesph Bridge (that was its original name after the Habsburg Emperor, Sissi’s husband) were built at the same time and they were also similar to each other. This gorgeous Art Nouveau style bridge is decorated with the Coat of Arms of Hungary and the two Turul statues, the legendary bird is the ancient symbol of our national identity. When you cross the bridge, you will arrive at the Gellért Hotel and Spa, a very popular thermal bath among locals as well.

After strolling the streets all day, Palack winebar - located next to the Gellért Hotel - is a perfect place for snacks and drinks. They offer a wide selection of Hungarian premium wines, the atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back.

Have a walk in the center and you will be fascinated by the panorama! Both sides of the Danube banks with its buildings and the Buda Castle are precious UNESCO World Heritage Sites from the Petőfi Bridge to the Margaret Bridge. Have you ever visited my gorgeous city? I can assure you that there are plenty of cool activities here during winter time as well. Nowadays we are experiencing beautiful winter days full of sunshine and snow. Let me take you to my favorite places: the Buda castle district and to the highest point,  the Citadel. 

The Castle district is one of my favorite places in the city with its colorful houses and medieval style. I started my walk from the building of the National Archives  towards the Matthias church. On the way I made a few photos on the Mary Magdalene church and monastery built in the 13th century in Gothic style.

The Matthias church was one of the first churches in the Buda Hills, it got enlarged during the centuries and what we see today is the result of a huge construction in the 19th century. When the church was occupied during the Turkish era, it used to be transformed into a mosque, the furnishing was removed.

Right next to the square a very popular touristic place is located, the Fisherman's Bastion, the most romantic place in the city. The 7 towers of the Bastion features the 7 Hungarian chieftains who had led their tribes to Hungary to settle down in 895. The towers are really pretty and you have the best lookout of the town.

Tóth Árpád promenade is a peaceful, relaxing place, I love the view and the little path was totally covered by snow. Look, how lovely it is! You have a great view of the other side of the city.

 
While passing by the gorgeous, medieval style streets, we will reach the Royal Palace. On the way you will see the Sándor Palace, nicely renovated, Neo-Classic style building, the office of the current President of Hungary.

Here comes the Royal Palace. The first palace on the site was actually a fortress built in the 14th century. After the second world war it became the center of culture, visit the National Széchenyi Library, the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. In September the largest wine festival takes place at this spot.

From the Buda Castle you will see the Citadel and all the historical bridges around. I often come here for a walk, just the admire the view and the royal surroundings.

If you take the traditional funicular, you will find yourself in the city center within a few minutes. The old construction is so nice and practical to get down to the feet of the Chain bridge.

If you are at the bridge, take tram Nr 19/41 and get till the stop Rudas bath, you can now climb with me to the highest point of Budapest, the amazing Citadel. This place used to be a fortress and it's a very popular lookout today. First I climbed to the Saint Gellert statue, which is an impressive monument dedicated to a bishop who led the Hungarian nation to the Christian faith.

It took me about 20 minutes to get to the top, to the Lady of Liberty, it was a nice, winter walk on a little path while the sun was slowly going down. Precious moments!

The statue was erected to commemorate the liberation of Budapest after WWII, Today it's one of the most emblematic sights of the city, people love this place because of the stunning view and the great atmosphere.

I could have a nice and clear view of the Buda Castle district, the birdges and the Danube. I felt so blessed, everytime I'm traveling all around the world, visitng breathtaking placea, I'm so glad to return back home and truly belong here.

While strolling the streets of Budapest, there are so many hidden gems on the way, we are not even aware of. I'm showing you a part of the Turkish heritage here. Did you know, that we used to be occupied by the Ottoman Empire for nearly 150 years starting in the 16th century till the expulsion of the Turks in 1686. As the consequence of these years, many things have changed and got influenced by the huge empire. Even though it all happened centuries ago, we still can see some memories of the Turks all around the country. We have some words that come from that era, for instance coffee (kávé), oats (árpa), mourning (gyász), brave (bátor). I"m showing you my favorite sights I just discovered since I live in Budapest. Don't ever miss the chance to visit these places, pretty unique!

My absolute Nr 1 is this hidden, small spa complex at the foot of the Margaret bridge on the Buda side, right next to the Lukács Bath. It's very rare to have an original Turkish bath dating back to the 16th century. It was one of the most luxurious and modern one at that time. There are more well-known ones with Turkish origins like Rudas or Király Bath in Budapest, but this Veli Bej is something really special.  The bath was commissioned by a pasha. You can still see the original pipes that were found by the archeologists.

I visited the place with my friends, we had so much fun. My first impression was that it's peaceful and not crowded at all, the reason behind it is that there is always a limited number of people who can enter at the same time, plus the spa is closing due to cleaning works from noon till 3 pm, afterwards it's open till 9 pm. Hot rooms, steam saunas, jacuzzi, everything you can wish for during the cold months, the roof windows let the interior illuminate with natural light, pure bliss! Highly recommended to try it during your stay!

A good 10 minute walk from the Veli Bej bath, you will find the tomb, that you can access easily from the Gül Baba street. Just climb the stairs and you will have a picturesque view on the neighborhood, when you reach the top. Gül baba was originally a Turkish "dervish" (member of a Muslim religious order) of Sultan Suleiman, who participated in the Ottoman invasion and he was probably killed during the fights. His tomb is an important symbol of the Turkish - Hungarian reconciliation.

It's a huge complex that combines the Ottoman architecture with some Hungarian influence: romantic style, Mediterranean colors, beautiful arcades.

The tomb is surrounded by a romantic, rose garden, the whole area has been restored just recently, it's official opening is the end of September. It will be operating as a museum. The place is a little bit off the beaten path, but definitely worth a visit!

If you walk from the tomb down to the Batthyány square, close to the Danube, you will find Fő street, walk there and you will bomb into two Turkish sights again. Under Fő utca 84. you will find another Turkish bath, quite neglected though inside, outside.  I hope it will be restored in the future, it could be the next spacious, new spa in Budapest.

Towards the Buda Castle, right on this street (Fő street 32.) you will see a beautiful church, that has nothing Turkish at the first sight. But if you see the side walls, you will realize the old Turkish architecture, at least the prayer place and some window frames. This church, like most of the churches during the Ottoman occupation, got transformed into a mosque, part of the old mihrab (the prayer niche) can still be seen on the side walls. I was so impressed by that!

The fashion boat left the harbor on a beautiful summer evening. Ludwig boat is nice and neat, has a good atmosphere and lots of space. Cruising in Budapest is always so chilling, you are surrounded by the beauties of my beloved city: stunning architecture, historical sights, Danube breeze, city light. When the sun was about to go down, the KE fashion show impressed us all.

Erika is dedicated to create wearable pieces with a twist, she is often inspired by nature.The ready-to-wear show was featuring cheerful women, lovely colors and classy shapes. The accessories were individually hand made, making each one a unique piece of elegance by Ildi Czok. It gave an extra layer of luxury to the whole show. The necklaces were so much in harmony with the dresses, the sophisticated details and beautiful artworks just take your breath away.

Judit Ferencz is the founder of STYLEXPERT, she is the one, who really opened my eyes, when it comes to colors and shapes. She is instantly warm, kind person who helps to organize your wardrobe and creates a harmony in your look. She made a presentation on fashion and style, she was explaining how to build your own image and how your look makes a very strong, first impression. Her message is: Dare to be unique! She published her first book: Build your style in 10 steps. We all learned a lot from this young, talented lady.

It feels so great to be back to my lovely Budapest. I was checking out programs in  the city, when I've found the Gozsdu Fashion Night event on Thursday. It's an open event without any entry fees and it takes place in the heart of the Jewish district, Gozsdu is very well known for the party mood and wide range of top restaurants. Read on my favorite places in the district HERE! This time besides the culinary experience, you could have enjoyed a great fashion event as well, where Hungarian talents presented their summer collections: Artz Modell, Hajnalka Tórizs Head Couture, Missq Fashion and Orovica, some of these names might sound familiar to you, since they are on the market for many years now.

I've just discovered these fabulous hats recently. It's a huge trend wearing hats as accessories, think of weddings or other elegant summer parties. I was falling in love with these unique designs, very creative and sophisticated indeed, I'm sure we will hear about Hajnalka Tórizs in the future.

The collection is more about formal dresses, it's a perfect choice for work or summer parties. Bright colors, elegant solutions with a touch of femininity.

Fancy, quality outfits with a hint of luxurious touch - that comes to my mind when I think of the brand. Since I have many summer events to attend in August, I'm sure I'll look for a new dress in the showroom on the Andrássy street.

I've seen lots of flower motives and fun colors on the catwalk. Easy summer dresses, really comfortable wear for all season.

I had such a great time with my friends. Hopefully Gozsdu keeps its good habit and I will see you at the Gozsdu Fashion Night next summer as well.

However I always buy a couple of trend-led pieces, classy, timeless items are the real jolly jokers in my wardrobe. Where can you find unique clothes and accessories? I just discovered a new showroom in the heart of Budapest, come and check it out with me!

Home of Fashion opened its gate in February. As soon as I entered the place, I realized I was in fashion paradise: elegant, charming rooms, welcoming atmosphere, cool but affordable designer items. Right now 16 local designers sell their goods here, although it's not just a showroom, but an important platform for the Hungarian fashion industry as well.

The showroom is an exciting initiation by two young talented girls, Ildi and Fany, who dared to dream big and created their own studio. It’s a unique shopping experience, where you can find customized fashion items and besides that you can meet the designers as well. They have fix opening hour weekdays from 1pm till 7 pm, on Saturday from 10 am till 2 pm. Style is about expressing yourself, choose the items, that represent the real you! Home of Fashion is the perfect place for that. If you can't find your size, they will make it ready for you and even send it by post: clothes, handbags, jewelry, shoes in all styles and colors.

Last week the showroom launched Scherfel Nora’s new shoe collection for spring-summer, I dropped by for an hour. Mandragora Design is a nature inspired shoemaking company, their items are customized and extremely comfortable, while using carefully selected quality leather from Italy.

Mainly classy flats are designed, you will also find cool, edgy pieces and vibrant shades. This collection was inspired by the pastel colors of the beach, the result is perfect harmony and sophisticated look. The iconic model is the so called "Audrey" shoe with bird pattern, which represents wing and freedom. The shoe is hand-made and all the process takes place in Hungary, which is a rare example. We are quite used to the fact that almost everything is „Made in China”. I appreciate this kind of art, because making shoes is a real art to me. Shapes will stand the rest of time, a descent pair of flats is a must have in everyone's wardrobe!

Let’s stick to Coco Chanel’s thought: „Fahion fades, only style is timeless”.

This weekend is not about the solid versions of classy dishes in Budapest. Every year the Gourmet Festival opens its gate in May, where you can indulge yourself with unique food creations dreamed up by the best chefs! In the frame of workshops and "gastro stage" you can learn about the latest culinary trends, star chefs from the region are invited, the festival exceeds its borders this time. You can register for lunch and dinner menus HERE, culinary heaven on top.

Millenáris Park is a nice, green place in the heart of the city, we were lucky with the weather as well. Charming stands welcome the food-lovers accompanied by the best wineries. Hungarian sparkling wine experiences a rise, Sauska Brut and Kreinbacher magnum premium brut were my choices for the evening. Bliss, bliss! The entrance ticket comes with a tasting glass, a glass of wine at the Grand Tokaj, the Villányi Redy bistro and welcome drink from Martini, plus some street food bites at the Electrolux stand.  You won’t stay hungry in Hungary this weekend, 53 bistros and restaurants prepared their creative menu for you.

At the festival three topics are featured this time: dumplings, caviar and champagne. I must admit, that delicious creations and bizarre pairings were born as well, I was curiously tasting the Bori Mami’s menu. The Gyöngyös - based restaurant is well-known for its creativity, professionalism and its amazing staff. Traditions and modernity are both joined in the menu by building a bridge between past and present. The entree goes perfectly with a good glass of champagne, Hungarian pinched noodles called „csipetke” with squid and snails, pure harmony! The idea was based on traditions, „csipetke” is a home-made pasta, often used in the Hungarian kitchen. The second course was rooster combs and balls with dumplings. Even though I was quite skeptical about it, the meal represented the perfect harmony with all the spices and flavors,  It simply melted away in your mouth. To me, the best part of the menu was the dessert: Ground cornmeal porridge called „puliszka”, with white chocolate and strawberries. It's still not late to taste the food creations at the stand nr 67!

Summer-like weather, gastronomy and wine, cool atmosphere, culture and heritage - these are all combined this weekend in the frame of two great festivals. I already visited the events and I can't wait to return back, here is my summary for you:

This is the place to be on Saturday evening, who can resist a glass of delicious wine? This festival became a tradition already, it's organized in the lovely City Park, just behind the Vajdahunyad Castle, lots of green space, gorgeous surroundings and great city vibes.

 
There are programs and live concerts all day, you can check it out here. Popular Hungarian wine producers offer their best selections from refreshing white wine, rosé and sparkling types. You should buy a glass at the entrance, it costs 1500 HUF, there are no other entry fees for the event. My favorite wineries for Hungarian sparkling wine is Garamvári, you can taste 76 exhibitors' offer this year.

At the food court street food is available: sausages, hamburgers, fries, pizzas. The event is mainly focused on Hungarian quality wine. Kids are also welcomed in the park, however don't expect any special programs for them! But if you bring some toys with you, it can be a nice family event for the weekend.

All in all it's a chilling program with friends or family, grab a glass, enjoy the atmosphere and explore the best wineries in Hungary!

This pleasant park next to the Mammut Mall welcomes the visitors all weekend. Székely Land moves to Budapest for a few days. Entrance fee is 500 HUF, for children under 12 it's free of charge. You know that I love Transylvania and I visit it every year, it's like second home to me. The people, the culture and the handicraft is unique, there are still some parts where I feel like I'm preserved in time,  it's an amazing world full of treasures. I was happy to be part of the Székely Festival this year, listening to folk music, tasting miccs (sausages), puliszka (ground cornmeal porridge) and kürtőskalács (chimney cake): Stop counting the calories now, it's time to taste the best of Székely Land!

Folk music and live concerts are on, morning time children programs are organized with tales and music. A good friend of mine from Tusnádfürdő is also performing on Saturday evening, I'll definitely be back at the festival. In the grand hall you can buy precious handcrafted goods from Székely region: clothes, hats, honey, porcelain, home-made jams, toys from wood, lots of amazing stuff. I bought a jar of honey and a straw hat for summer. Great deal!

Saturday I was invited to the secret world of perfume, another special event organized by It’s YOUR World. Creating my own scent with Daniel Pescio was a great adventure. Christian Dior said: "A women’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting." A unique fragrance makes a huge impact, it’s the best accessory. When I have pleasant scent, I‘m more confident and I feel much more in balance. I like to change my perfumes occasionally, some scents work better in different seasons and put me in a certain mood. Daytime perfume should be light, while bold scents are the best for special occasions.

When I first learned, that I can make my own signature scent with an expert, I was thrilled. Honestly, how cool is that! A fragrance, that’s truly mine and created by me with the help of a professional perfumer.

Daniel was born in Brazil and he’s been working in France for more than 20 years now. He graduated the world famous schools of perfumes set in France. He was chosen in the 15 best perfumers in the competition organized by the American Society of Perfumers. 100 perfumers participated on this event worldwide. He’s been working for prestigious brands such as Chanel, Dior, Tom Ford, Prada, Narciso Rodrigues, Hermès, Lutens. As a perfume expert, he gives lectures in different countries all around the world, while he is building his own brand. His main inspiration is Dominique Ropion. Daniel is known for working with high-quality, natural components. It’s his love job, his passion. We were lucky to have him in Budapest for the perfume creating event by It’s YOUR World. He is very inspirational, a talented artist and a fun personality, creating perfume is an art of senses. Balancing different notes in order to create the perfect composition is a complex process, it takes years to master.

Saturday morning we all gathered together in the Cosmic Latte salon, a really pleasant place with charming rooms and great atmosphere. Gasztroamazonok served snacks and delicious bites during the workshop. High quality, healthy food with a twist: creative solutions, seasonal meals prepared with love and great care. Pure perfection!

We learned about the perfume creating process in theory, Daniel explained us the Jean Carles perfume pyramid, where three notes are distinguished: top notes, that are mainly fruity and light. The heart notes, flowery and spicy aromas belong here, finally the bottom notes with woody scents, vanilla and muscs. The volatility of your fragrance will depend on these elements. Finally we chose those aromas, we liked the most and with Daniel’s help, everybody had the chance to create her own unique composition.

I loved the workshop, the team, the vibes and I'm very satisfied with the outcome. A personalized fragrance, that’s totally me. However we should still wait about 2 weeks in order to smell the final result, I love my scent already.
