My Top 3 cities in the world

2/22/2018

These are my favorite cities based on what I’ve been visiting so far all around the world. I’m not ranking my beloved Budapest, because this city is above everything else to me, since I live here and I know every corner of it. There are still a lot of places on my bucket list and this list seems to be growing even longer as it is. There are many places I visited several times before but I keep coming back, because I miss the atmosphere, the culture and the people.

Nr 3 Dubai - the multicultural city

Dubai is a constantly changing city, every year something new comes out, incredible architecture, posh places in the middle of a desert. I was amazed by the never-ending developments, the huge shopping malls, the beautiful beaches and the luxury all around. You should definitely see this place once in a lifetime. Nr 2 Los Angeles - the cosmopolitan city

I visited LA a few times already. A dazzling city and stunning beach is always a nice combination: lush vegetation, palm trees, lovely weather. There are so many faces of this place. If you are looking for relaxation, you should head to the beach. Santa Monica is my favorite spot. Hollywood and Beverly Hills are famous from movie scenes, this city has a special energy. Nr 1 - Paris - the most romantic city

And here comes my absolute favorite one: the city of style, fashion and culture. I was only 18 when I first had a trip to Paris, since that I returned back many times. It was love at first sight. So many hidden gems, gorgeous architecture, the French women are famous for their effortless, chick style. It is something that’s unique and cannot be compared to anything else. I even started to learn French to get a deeper understanding of the country. Not an easy language, but I’m trying hard… I feel like there is always something new to discover in France. I’m sure I’ll be back soon. More on my Paris visit here: Bonjour Paris!

Medieval streets, stunning architecture, delicious food. Most of the famous monuments, such as St. Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge and numerous churches and palaces were built in the XIV.-th century under the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV. The Charles Bridge is the oldest bridge of the city with its stunning Gothic bridge towers, it used to be called the Stone bridge. It was only during the early XIX.-th century that the bridge acquired its current name, after Emperor Charles IV. The bridge used to serve as a place of execution. First it looked much simpler, more functional, most of statues were erected during the rise of baroque only. Today it’s a pleasant, romantic place packed with tourists.

Close to the Old Town Square,  there were stunning buildings all around, I especially loved the  Prague astronomical clock, which is definitely the greatest treasure of the city. The oldest part of the clock dates back to 1410 when it was made by clockmaker. The background represents the Earth and the sky. You will also realize the signs of the zodiac and walk of the Apostles every hour.

Christmas mood

The Christmas markets are open daily at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square everyday from the beginning of December till 6th of January. Children love the animals stable, where you can stroke sheep, goats. The atmosphere is lovely, be prepared for the crowd though.

Art-Nouveau

If you are interested in art, I highly recommend you visiting the Mucha exhibition. Czech Art Nouveau artist, Alfons Mucha,  is well-known for his graceful women paintings, delicate colors and sophisticated style. At the back you can watch a short movie on his life. Spend an hour wandering around the gallery and admiring the Czech talent’s posters, paintings and sketches!

Dining tips

First evening I just fall in love with the restaurant called U Malvaze: really traditional with rustic design and creative interior. I prefer local food, so I had Bohemian-style braised beef with bread dumplings and cranberries. It was delicious.

The other place I tried for lunch was the Tri Stoleti, I had a delicious soup there called Goulash and a different kind of dumplings again.

Airport shopping

At the airport, I had time to look around, I've found this amazing shop, called Manufaktura. It turned out that it’s a Czech concept with original, high-quality cosmetic products and spa accessories made of traditional Czech natural ingredients. I loved the Wine collection with the beneficial effects of grape seed. Unique conception indeed.

However it was my second time in Prague already, I hope to return anytime soon. There is so much more to discover.

Grape harvest time at the countryside

The „Hungarian Tuscany” in Northern Hungary

Borsod – Abaúj –Zemplén county is the place where I was born and it always will be special to me.  This region might not be as well known as the famous sights in Budapest, even though it’s home to the most beautiful natural wonders, waterfalls, hiking trails, wine regions and untouched nature.  I’m referring to that as the „Hungarian Tuscany”, look at the photos and you will understand me: forests, hills, vineyards, the place has its own charm.  In some villages you have the feeling that time has stopped, discover these hidden gems and learn more about my culture! In this article I'm writing about the grape harvest traditions and my countryside in autumn.

Photos on the region, namely Ládbesenyő and Tomor villages and their areas:

Hungarian grape harvest traditions

Autumn is the time for grape harvesting. Basically from September till November people gather together on  the vineyards and collect the grapes by hand. It’s a hard work, but it’s a real feast at the same time, when families and friends come together. They deserve a traditional meal accompanied with wine and snack after collecting the grapes.  At the end of the day a huge party is organized to celebrate the successful season. Grape harvest has been part of my life since I remember. I couldn't wait to be at the feast as a little child and meet the relatives and friends for this special occasion.

The pickers  have shouted to the dough carrier boys and men, who were collected the grape into the “puttyony-s” (the Hungarian name of the dough). I was proudly shouting „Puttonyos!” to empty my bucket. Late supper always included a nice, rich goulash soup accompanied with fresh bread. Poppy seed and walnut roll called "beigli" is also part of the harvest meal.  As a snack we eat pogácsa, Hungarian crispy cheese biscuits.

Well - deserved glass of Riesling
My father inherited the vineyard from his father, since that he has been managing it successfully and it’s his passion today. Planting, harvesting, fermentation and all aspects of wine making are in his hands. This wine region is called Cserehát, it officially belongs to Bükkalja wine region and it's located on the southern slopes of the Bükk Mountain. The first documents referring to wine-making date back to the 14th century.   The main grape varieties include Italian Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Kékoportó, Merlot, Kadarka and Zweigelt.  The soil is mostly clay and rhyolite tuff at some places.

At the traditional grape harvest festivals wineries celebrate the end of the harvest season with parades, cooking competitions and folk programs. The Buda Castle Wine Festival was part of this feast, you can read about it in my previous articles.

Enjoy a glass of nice wine from Bükkalja wine region! Cheers

Snow Ballerinas - theatrical fashion show by Tamás Náray

Tamás Náray, the Hungarian fashion designer is known for creative initiations, he is a polyhistor himself.  I loved the idea of combining a fashion show with theatrical elements, classical music and dance show. He even shared with us a piece from his book, Zarah, that has been published recently. With my best friend we were lucky to enjoy the show yesterday at the Royal Gardens in Budapest, the location already served as a perfect set for such a glamorous performance.

Dresses were elegant, very feminine and classy with a twist, fur coats and sophisticated details. There were different sections, each consisted of similar design and color blocks. Deep red, white and black was so royal.

Bows, fur and flower motifs made the collection even more sophisticated and what I liked the most, that each and every piece was unique, but still wearable. See my choices below:

Glam and luxury everywhere. Mission is accomplished, hats off to you, Dear Tamás Náray!

Snapshots of a traditional Hungarian village

Picture
Picture
The rural Hungary is very different from the urban lifestyle. Bogács is a little, traditional Hungarian village at the foot of the Bükk hills, known for its healing thermal waters and excellent wine cellars. I personally love this village, so calm and peaceful, I usually spend here several weeks during summer time, since my family owns an apartment in Bogács. Today I went for a walk and took photos about the cute, traditional houses and also walked to the lookout, where you can have a nice panorama on the whole region. Enjoy my photos, as much as I enjoyed taking them for you.

Nr 2: Danube breeze on the Kopaszi Dam

Picture
Picture
It's another great place, what locals love. It's located on the Southern part of Buda, right at the Rákóczi bridge. You can hide from the smog and the crowd. There are restaurants and open-air places here and just like on the Római Beach, it's also a family friendly place full of kids corner and playgrounds. Compared to Római, it's a more fancy place, but both has its own charm. I enjoyed a light dinner at Veranda, which is a modern, Italian-styled bistro, great choice! If you like Hungarian cuisine with a modern twist, choose Vakvarjú Beach. At Le Bistro you can dance salsa every Tuesday evening during summer time.

In case you just need a relaxing walk close to the Danube at a clean, nice place, surrounded by nature, go for it!
