Porto is the gastro heaven to me, I love Mediterranean cuisine anyway. Here comes a review on a restaurant in the center, strolling the streets in Ribera quarter at night, than finally eating out in the harbor at locals' place. Camafeu Restaurant First evening I was looking for a nice place for dinner in the center and I finally found Camafeu on Tripadvisor. It's a small, cozy restaurant on the first floor overlooking the square. As soon as you enter the place, you feel the welcoming atmosphere, service is excellent and top quality. The design is authentic and elegant with some rustic elements. Booking a table in advance is highly recommended! |
Chateau d'Etoges | Orangerie |
The center of the region is Reims, the famous champagne houses are located in Epernay on the Avenue de Champagne. We visited the region with our friends and we chose to stay in a stylish Chateau d'Etoges (www.etoges.com). The castle is an ideal spot for visiting the most important parts of the region. You can feel the real history here, the castle was built around the 12th, 13th century, it had many owners during the past and finally the whole building was renovated by the family Fillette- Neuwille in 1991, it started to operate as hotel in 1992. The breakfast includes salmon, eggs, a wide variety of pastry, ham, cheese and even champagne. What I liked the most is the style of the rooms and the atmosphere of the place.
Picnic in the garden
A great plus is the amazing, huge garden where you can just sit on a bench, grab a good bottle of champagne and have some bites of cheese, the best way to relax and enjoy your time.
Epernay and Reims – The champagne Heaven
The town of Epernay is surrounded by wineries, stroll the Avenue de Champagne, where all the most prestigious champagne houses are located. The architecture is stunning here, the residencies of the companies are chateaux-style buildings with decorative facade. The whole street has an elegant, chic atmosphere. Most of the champagne houses offer tasting and cellar visit. We booked appointment online in advance, but there are tours usually every hour, check the homepage of the house you plan to visit.
Moët & Chandon
Visiting Moet&Chandon cellar and tasting their champagne is a must-do in Epernay. We had a great one hour English tour, very informative, than we had the chance to taste Rose and Vintage champagne in the frame of the "Grand Vintage" tour. Vintage champagne usually come in full bottles, so it's great to taste two different types by glass. The chateau is itself very elegant, nicely decorated, they produce top-quality champagne. It was magical to see the bottles of the Dom Perignon maturing.
Veuve Clicquot
It's another impressive place to visit in Reims, the tour guide was professional, he spoke an excellent English. I was quite impressed by the place. Did you know that they produced rose champagne first in history? Madame Clicquot was such an inspiring, strong person, she lost her husband at an early age, still she didn't give up and she took over his business. She introduced many innovations, she created a more elegant bottle and she was the first who produced vintage champagne (1810). This young, 27-year-old widow (from here comes the name "Veuve") became a leader in the industry, she is known as "Le Grande Dame de la Champagne".
Authentic champagne tour in Dom Perignon's village
If you are eager to try local producers' products as well, I highly recommend you visiting Hautvillers.
This is a little village, where everything started, Monk Dom Perignon worked at the Abbey. He discovered the sparkling wine accidentally, later on he introduced new methods of producing the real champagne, he was able to harness the fermentation process first in history. His tomb can be found today in the chancel of the Saint-Sindulphe abbey church.
The place itself is worth a visit, not to mention the Restaurant called Au36, where you can book a table in advance and taste 6 types of local champagne, plus regional specialties like macaron, cheese, duck variations. We found this place on tripadvisor and I must say that we can highly recommend it to everybody: cozy, stylish patio, quality food and local champagne served. Everything was professional.
How to dress for a champagne tour?
The temperature is often chilly inside the cellars around 12-13 Celzius (aprox.53 Fahrenheit), so dress warm, grab a coat or thick jumper, wear comfortable, warm shoes. These houses are so impressive and elegant, add a chic scarf or a nice bag to your outfit and enjoy this royal place!
French cuisine
In the middle ages French cuisine was influenced by Italian cuisine, than only in the 17th century it started to develop its own ways, what we know today as French cuisine. Some combinations of cheese and wine always appears in most of the region, the kitchen relies on fruit, vegetables and meat, the spices and sepcialities may vary in all regions. The Champagne Ardenne region features fine, gourmet food. The andouillette de Troyes is a traditional pork product (sausage with special seasoning). The Joute is a traditional dish, it's a kind of vegetable stew. End your meal with a creamy Brie cheese from Meaux (Champagne region).
Compared to America for instance, portions are a lot smaller in France, however they serve several courses, rather than having one big meal.
We were staying in Chateau d'Etoges, so we didn't want to miss a chance to try their Michelin-rated, gourmet restaurant. They have an outstanding wine list and professional sommeliers. They serve authentic, French food. We loved the cheese trolley, you can choose from a wide range of local cheese types.

Short visit in Châlons-en-Champagne
We were walking around in the old town of the city. It's very French and peaceful. We planned to take a boat trip on the canal, but the boat service was closed for that day. Still it's a nice idea to drop by and have a coffee if you are close to the city.

Reims Cathedral
Notre-Dame de Reims (Our Lady of Reims) is the place where the kings of France were crowned. Marc Chagall designed the stained glass. The cathedral receives about one million visitors annually. Since we were close to the city, we dropped by and visited the Gothic cathedral and the main square only. It's on UNESCO World Heritage List.
I hope you enjoyed my "tour" of the region and you will have a chance to spend here a few days and visit these fabulous sights.
For me, January is all about outdoor activities and spa in the mountains: skiing, hiking, Nordic walking, cross-country skiing and wellness. The crispy, cold mountain air and the high peeks make me admire the nature. If you also enjoy the Alpine lifestyle, follow me, I will take you to the French Alps and show you three different places, where you can truly enjoy winter, snow and quality services.
Mont Blanc - Saint Gervais-les-bains
It was my dream to see the Mont Blanc, the „White Mountain” , that rises 4,808.73 meters above sea level, it’s the highest mountain in the Alps. Being able to ski in the valley at the foot of the Mont Blanc, it’s something you should try once in a life. I will share my photos and experiences with you about this first class ski region. We were staying in a little, cute town called Saint Gervais-les-bains, the place feels so French. There are three towns that surround the mountain: Courmayeur in Italy, Chamonix and Saint Gervais in France. It’s a popular holiday destination from the 1900s. It offers 450 kilometers of ski slopes and a relaxed environment. The place got its name from the thermal springs.
Truly French town - Saint Gervais center
Accommodation
We chose Le Grand Panorama. It’s a basic, budget accommodation close to the cable car. The town center is a good 10 minutes walk. It’s equipped with everything you need for a one week holiday, all rooms have balcony. Pay attention to the fact that every extra things come at a cost, like bed linen, cleaning fee, sauna, local tax. All in all it’s a friendly place with a great location.
Slopes - mountains - winter beauties
Megève
During our stay we visited an authentic, lovely place called Megève. It's close to Saint Gervais. If you are ready to discover the French lifestyle, go to the main square and enjoy the charm of the place. The city is the most glamorous one in the Alps. You can rent a luxury chalet or enjoy your stay in an elegant five star hotel. There is wide range of high-class shops and restaurants.
Les Orres
This place is located at 1650 meters high in the Southern Alps. It has 88 km of marked ski runs, 40 km of cross-country ski trails. Even if you are a beginner, you will find the slopes that are perfect for you, plus it has an excellent snow coverage all season. It’s a family focused place, also the facilities are suitable for all ages. If you are not into skiing, you can try horse-riding, ice-skating, snowmobile, or just go for a walk, enjoy the sun and the spa facilities.
Accommodation
We were staying at the Résidence Les Balcons des Airelles. The self-catered apartments are located close to the main ski lift, so it offers you an easy access to the slopes. There is a stunning view that you can enjoy from almost all of the rooms and after some outdoor activities it feels great to jump in the heated pool. It’s a nice place with simple furniture and design at a reasonable price.
Trois Vallées
The „Three Valleys” is an exceptional ski region, since it’s the largest ski area of the world, it has 600 km of ski slopes. Most sites are operated by locals, and their warm welcome makes it a lovely place! It offers a good snow coverage.

Gastronomy
I can highly recommend the cheese fondue and raclette. The cheese fondue is originally known as the poors’ dish. The receipt combines white wine with processed cheese and garlic seasoning.
Cheese fondue by www.bigoven.com
Raclette is a Savoy specialty, it’s also based on processed cheese, potatoes and it can accompanied with onion, meat or any kind of vegetables. It received its name from a tasty, Swiss cheese. Try it at home with your friends on a long, winter evening! Choose some good French white wine for these local specialties! Cheers!

Fashion innovations
Paris is today one of the fashion capitals of the world, and let’s be honest, it all started here in the 17th century initiated by Louis XIV. He was the Sun King and he wanted to be in the center of everything that was beautiful and luxurious, so the luxury goods industry was established by the royals. The French press was created at that time and it’s main focus was fashion and how fashion changed during the seasons. In the late 19’s the French fashion industry exploded due to the foundation of the Vogue magazine in 1892, and the first fashion houses (Source: wikipedia). They were first influenced by Orientist and Art Nouveau. We all know the biggest revolutionist Coco Chanel, who created the most iconic brand in history. My favorite quote from her is:
I must say she stuck to that. She was a role model for women; fashion was her weapon to show that women are free to decide about their lives. She often proved that in her personal life, she refused the norms; she was dedicated to her work despite all the difficult periods, ups and downs. She died as a legend and even today she gives hope, inspiration and encouragement to women by her personal life as the best example.
Besides Coco I should mention such big names like Christian Dior who lead the world’s attention in 1947, he unveiled his „New Look”, clinched in waists contrasted with majestic busts and full skirts.
www.dior.com
Hubert de Givenchy and Pierre Balmain both opened fashion houses soon, and let’s not forget about Yves Saint Laurent, who created „prêt-à-porter” ("ready to wear") in 1966, he was the first in history who made fashion accessible for the mass.
Paris will always play an important role if it comes to fashion, such an elegant, inspirational city. Walk on the Champs Elysees or Place Vendome, and feel the vibes!

Salon International de L’Agriculture - a culinary experience
There is another reason why I love Paris, and it’s an exciting exhibition held at Porte Versailles, the Salon International de L’Agriculture (https://en.salon-agriculture.com). It’s a discovering, gastronomic tour, where farmers bring their goods to the city, therefore you can pet animals, see the biggest bulls in the country, taste cheese, wine and all regional products of France and the French Polynesia as well. It’s not just an exhibition, but a real culinary discovery in the heart of the city. It will be held next year from the 25th of February till the 5th of March. If you plan to visit the city anyway, make a stop here and you won’t regret it, I promise.
Sightseeing in the city
Tour Eiffel
Now let’s discover the main spots, like the Tour Eiffel. Discover the Iron Lady, the beloved icon of Paris, which was built in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel, until 1929 it was the tallest tower of the world. Millions of people climb the Eiffel Tower every year and it had over 250 million visitors since its opening. Being so popular, the Eiffel Tower design has been recreated around the world, including a replica at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel in Nevada, USA and a Tokyo Tower in Japan. The tower's three platforms are home to two restaurants, several buffets, a champagne bar and many gift shops.
Champs Élysées
The most famous avenue in Paris is Champs Élysées. Here stands Arc de Triomphe. Stop at Concorde and walk on the Avenue till the Arc de Triomphe. You will not regret it, enjoy the glam of the city. Fashion, unique buildings and elegance will surround you on the way.
Place Vendôme
There is another center of luxury in Paris, that’s the Place Vendôme. The impressive buildings on the square serve today as residences as well as retail stores, including some well-known dress designers. The very expensive Hotel Ritz and Hotel Vendôme are also located here. A number of famous people have also lived along Place, including composer Frédéric Chopin (who died in no. 12), Ernest Hemingway even claimed to have helped liberate the Ritz in 1944.(Source: Wikipedia)
Montmarte and Moulin Rouge
Montmartre is a large hill in Paris, many artists had studios here, worked and lived in the area like Claude Monet, Salvador Dali, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, just naming a few of them. It’s the arty, bohemian district, you will feel the atmosphere. Get there by metro line 2 and stop at Pigalle.
The very famous Moulin Rouge is located here too. At the beginning, the Moulin Rouge throw champagne-filled parties, where famous dancers performed. In this period the world famous quartet known as the French Cancan was born as well. The Moulin Rouge served drinks during shows, spectators sometimes themselves dancing on the dance floor. With an unconventional architecture and extravagant decoration, the Moulin Rouge was more than just attracting clients who simply wanted to have fun.

The eyes of the Moulin Rouge was Toulouse–Lautrec, who loved Montmarte and attended the shows every evening, his task was to draw the dancers and the customers. He drew the first advertising poster for the Moulin Rouge in 1891 (La Goulue). Even today it’s the symbol of the place. Through his work and art, the era and the atmosphere of the district is well demonstrated. At that time such a poster was an important innovation concerning the silhouette and letter styling. Today anybody can enjoy a show at the Moulin Rouge and travel back in time.
Sacré-Cœur
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris is a Roman catholic church on the highest point in the city. The basilica was built in response to the Paris Commune uprising of 1871. The huge central dome that, seen from a distance, gives the basilica a passing resemblance to the Taj Mahal (Source: dailymail.co.uk). The view is stunning from here.
Notre Dame
Let’s go beneath the surface. Notre Dame de Paris is visited by approx. 13 million tourists every year. The cathedral was built between 1163 and 1345, it is designed in the Gothic style. The largest bells in the South tower weights 13 tons. The three rosettes Notre-Dame de Paris are one of the greatest masterpieces of Christianity.
Latin Quarter
An absolute lovely district is the Latin Quarter close to the Notre Dame. You can easily get there by metro or RER stopping at Saint Michel/Cité. Start your tour in the Notre Dame, than cross the Seine and explore the neighborhood. It gets the name from the fact that Latin was the language of the students in the Middle Ages, here are the oldest universities in France, Sorbonne is a few blocks away. The district is known for its student life, bistros and restaurants. Have a lunch here with your friends and enjoy the laid back atmosphere.
Food and drinks
For breakfast try croissant with a bit of jam and an espresso, it’s a must.
Escargots are typical Parisian bistro fare, stuffed with butter, parsley and garlic. Mop up the baguette in the sauce!
You can find steak everywhere on the menus. It feels good to eat a warm soup in the cold, I often prepare French onion soup at home, it’s easy to make and it’s delicious.
In France you will find crêpes stands everywhere, it’s made of wheat and filled with anything salty or sweet you can wish for.
Ladurée and Pierre Hermé: Note these two names if you would like to try a real, French macaron. Both of the houses are big names in pastry and truly French. https://www.laduree.com/en_int, http://www.pierreherme.com

Christmas menu
Traditionally a French family is attending a holy mass and after that they gather for a Christmas Eve dinner, le réveillon, how they call it. If it comes to Christmas menu, try the famous Foie Gras, made of duck liver, it has a buttery, rich taste, it comes as a pâté. Escargot is also a common choice as a starter, just like oysters. For main course there are so many variations, it also depends on the region. Duck, turkey, ham and fish are mostly on the menus. Chestnuts are used for stuffing and cranberries for sauces. Une bûche de Noël is the traditional desert, a buttercream cake in the shape of a log, topped with colorful little Christmas figurines, and cut in individual slices.
What to drink for all these delicious courses? French champagne is in harmony with the first course and choose a red Bordeoux for the main dish. If you are a wine lover, you will find some excellent wine selection all around France.

Santé!
According to a legend, Hercules loved a Nymph, called Amalfi, when she died, he buried her at the most beautiful place in the world, that’s what we call the Amalfi coast today.
What comes to my mind first is: Spectacular landscape and history at one place, breathtaking scenery, beautiful gardens, olive grows, little, narrow streets, hidden beaches.
Stretching south of the Bay of Naples, winding along the Tyrrhenian Sea. Mild climate: around 10 degrees in winter and 35 maximum in summer time. The whole coastline belongs to UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We booked our accommodation in Sorrento. It's perfect, because you can reach the Amalfi coast and even Capri easily. It’s also good to spend a few hours in Sorrento, just wondering around. We found cheap flights to Naples, then rented a car. During these 3 days we discovered the following places on the Amalfi coast: Positano, Amalfi, Ravello.

Grand Hotel La Place and the Mount Vesuvius in the background
Positano
Since I saw the movie, Under the Tuscan sun, I wanted to visit this region and I have to say I was not disappointed at all. You have a nice view of the colorful houses above, very fashionable and stylish villas. This place used to be a fishing village, it got popular lately.
So many actors, celebrities and artists got inspired by this landscape. Just naming a few: Ingrid Bergman, Pablo Picasso, Elizabeth Taylor. Even ancient Romans loved to spend their holiday on this coast. The way you can get fit here is actually climbing the ancient stairs of the city. It’s good walking around and taking a few shots on the volcanic gray sandy beach and the spectacular landscape.
During summer season, it’s perfect to lay on the beach and relaxing, Spiaggia Grande is the longest beach on the Amalfi coast.

Amalfi
Another charming city on the coast, in the center you can find the Arab-Sicilian cathedral of Sant’ Andrea Apostolo with its marvelous flight of steps and cloister. It has a small beach, but it’s fairly crowded during summer. Local crafts can be purchased everywhere. If you get hungry, where can you get the best fish? In the bay, of course! Always a good idea to drop by!
Relax and enjoy”la dolce vita”!
Relax and enjoy”la dolce vita”!
Ravello
Ravello rises three hundred meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Panoramic viewpoints at Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone are absolutely breathtaking, they are overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Villa Cimbrone is a hotel now, but it used to be the spot for romantic rendezvous for Great Garbo and her lover.
Food and drinks
One of the world’s most beloved cuisine is the Italian. I always like to check the seasonal, fresh ingredients. During autumn the harvest offers the best options, like mushrooms. They put it in pasta, pizza, even in meat dishes. In November it’s very typical to eat pumpkin, try in ravioli. You start to smell chestnuts all around, very nice street food. November is the pick month of the very expensive truffles, Italians enjoy its flavor in sauce, pasta and even omelet.
On the Amalfi coast you can enjoy Limoncello liqueur, it's made of fresh, Italian lemons. If you prefer wine, you are at the right place. Let's not forget that in this region wine making goes back thousands of years. The volcanic soil and the grape varieties let us produce high quality, premium wine.
Now let`s combine Amalfi style with the latest fashion trends.
My travel basics
How to start? I organise my travel all by myself, you more likely receive, what you expected if you do so. Low cost airlines are great, I usually check them all and also choose the accommodation via Booking (www.booking.com) or Airbnb (www.airbnb.com). Great things about these 2 systems are that you can browse many photos and read personal reviews, that might help you to decide which one to pick. Airbnb allows you to have a deep look at people' life in your destination. On this site local people advertise their homes (boats, little studios, castles, apartments, all type of accomodations), you can rent one room or an entire home, depends on you and your needs. Honestly we love great hotels and private beaches, but discovering a country from a more personal point of view is always the best experience, you can ever wish for. All routs and trips will be organized from Budapest, as the center of Europe, but on the low cost airlines' homepages you can easily see your opportunities from all around the world. For flights check www.momondo.com, for us it works out the best as a searching engine.
Destination of the month
The sea always inspires me, one of my favorite islands in Europe is Capri, this hidden treasure will be our destination of the month. How to get there cheap from Budapest? Flying with Wizzair (https://wizzair.com) to Naples is a good idea, if you book a few months in advance, you can get a return ticket under 90 EUR/person. Wizzair recently changed its policies on baggage allowance, always read the homepage before booking, but if you travel light, you might fit in a small handbag. Naples is an amazing city itself, but let's concentrate on our destination now, from Naples many ferries are departing to Capri, please find the ferry schedule: http://www.capri.net/en/ferry-schedule
Do not bring your car to Capri, it's a really small island, you can walk around or rent a moped there.
Do not bring your car to Capri, it's a really small island, you can walk around or rent a moped there.
Sightseeing
Take your time, have comfortable shoes on and go for a long walk! There is a track that goes around the island from Anacapri. It takes a bit more than 1 hour to walk around. The island is aprox six kilometers long and two kilometers wide, it has two towns, Capri and high above, Anacapri. Do not miss to take a chairlift to Monte Solaro, 589 meters above sea level, is the highest and most panoramic point on the island. It takes aprox 10 minutes to get there, take the chairlift from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri! From there follow the little streets and walk around the island. Augustus Garden is a nicely maintained botanic garden, it is another great place you should pop in and get inspired. If you only spend a few hours in Capri, go to this garden, and there is a great view of Faraglioni: the three spurs of rock which rise up out of the sea, very typical shot of Capri. |
If you walk to the other side, you can have a nice view of Via Krupp and Marina Piccolo from here. The pathway is currently closed due to the danger of falling rocks.
Boat trips
I spent 1 day in Capri and I'm glad I didn't miss the boat trip. There are many trips you can choose from, 2 hours, 1 hour, it depends on how much time you have. We chose the 1 hour tour and I saw a lot of nice things. Its commercial to visit the caves of course, but it's worth it! When sea conditions are fine, the boat takes you inside the grotto. We had the chance to see the pretty corals at the Red cave, and the water is so clear. In Capri you can find one of the oldest lighthouse in Italy, its the Punta Carena. It faces a rocky bay, the area is quit. You can have a look at it from the boat, or if you walk there, the best time is at dusk. All in all its special to see the island from the sea. |
Shopping in Capri
Wherever I travel, I always check the main shopping street of the place. Via Camerelle, the elegant shopping street of Capri, has a nice location and you can also find traditional, Italian brands here. Have a glass of limoncello and observe the local life!
Traditional cuisine
First thing that comes to our mind is Insalata Caprese, the original comes with creamy mozzarella, fresh basil and fruity olive oil. We are in Italy, so the most famous food is pasta and in Capri you can taste the Ravioli Capresi. It’s a vegetarian dish, it consists of parmigiano and caciotta cheese, marjoram, basil souce and fresh tomato. Italians often eat pasta as first course and in Capri you can choose fish for second course, there is a wild range you can choose from, always fresh, cought along the shores. If you love seafood, don’t miss the opportunity to try the local shrimp, it’s often served with pasta or rice. The traditional almond and chocolate cake, called Torta Caprese is the best treat.
Light local specialties taste great with white wine. Capri Bianco is produced from 2 types of Italian grapes: Falanghina and Greco Biano. Perfect blend for seafood.

Lemon Limonchello di Capri | Let’s not forget that Capri is famous for the Limoncello. It is made from the island’s organically growned lemons. The world famous Limoncello di Capri is worth tasting. The history of the liquor goes back to the 19th century. I tried this brand and I absolutely loved it, check their homepage, you can even find great recipes for limoncello cocktails there: http://www.limoncello.com/en/the-limoncello Restaurant: During our 1 day stay we picked Ristorante Il Geranio. It’s close to Augustus garden and from your table you have a breathtaking view of the Faraglioni. The food was great and nicely served, the menu is inspired by Mediterranean gastronomic traditions. I highly recommend it! |
